Live on ITV as a 'Midweek World Cup Special' in all regions at 7:20-9:20pm, Jim Rosenthal presenting on-site with Jimmy Greaves and handing over to the respective commentary teams. Terry Yorath joined Moore & St John. At the end of the game the TV pictures showed Scotland manager Jock Stein being carried down the tunnel, seemingly conscious but obviously unwell. It later transpired that he had suffered a heart attack and despite the best efforts of the Scottish team doctor (a heart surgeon) the 62 year old tragically died in the treatment room. Mike England, the Wales manager said; 'I saw Jock collapse. The whistle went for a free-kick and I thought it was full-time, I saw photographers bothering him and he put out a hand to try and move one of them away. As soon as Jock turned round I knew something was wrong - he clutched at his chest and I thought he had had a heart attack.' Willie Miller, the stunned Scottish captain said; 'It's unbelievable. What can I say?' Stein, a Protestant, had been the first manager to guide a British club side to European Cup success, his Celtic team won the trophy in 1967 beating Inter Milan 2-1 in Lisbon where Bill Shankly, the great Liverpool manager, was said to have forced his way through the dressing room at the end of the game to shake Stein's hand - 'John' said Shankly, 'You're immortal.'
