Watch Steven Thompson present BBC Sportscene for the Scottish Premiership match

The Scottish Premiership competition kicks off on 17 October 2026 at 22:30 UK time, with the BBC Sportscene programme delivering the broadcast. Viewers can follow the action through BBC One Scotland HD, BBC Sportscene and the BBC iPlayer (geo/R) feeds, all presented by Steven Thompson.

A former player now leading the punditry

Steven Thompson brings a rare pedigree to the mic. A long-serving Scottish footballer, he cut a path through the careers of Dundee United, Rangers, Cardiff City, Burnley and St Mirren. He also featured as a Scotland international between 2002 and the early 2000s, before his professional football career drew to a close.

Once his playing days ended, Thompson turned his mind toward media. By November 2016 he had become a columnist for the Scottish newspaper The Herald, and he has since built a reputation as a sharp commentator. His own words capture the shift: the BBC approached him to work as a pundit, and while hosting a show was "nerve-wracking at first," the opportunity gave him the chance he never imagined.
