McNamara was born in Limerick, in the Republic of Ireland, where he attended the Jesuit Rugby School – Crescent College – whose alumni include Terry Wogan, Richard Harris, Bill Whelan (Riverdance Composer) as well as rugby internationals David Wallace and Peter Clohessy.
