Is watching football becoming a luxury for the few?
The increase in the cost of basic necessities and energy have pushed to divert their salaries towards other priorities. What has also changed is the perception of football: if it was once seen as a pastime to empty the mind after a week of work or thoughts, it has now effectively become a luxury for true fans. Also, thanks to the distribution and transmission methods that - and it is inevitable - have made it so. The way of telling the matches has also changed: but it is undeniable that the costs have become too high, in the face of a decline in competitiveness and quality of the football product.
We cannot fail to take our 2024/25 football TV guide as a reference . As is known, the Serie A League has confirmed for another five years the broadcast system that users have become familiar with in the last three years: the matches will be broadcast by DAZN and Sky as exclusive. Which many other are also signing in trough an online betting site and watch the game for free with on-going livescore prediction.
Starting from the Premier League , for example, we discovered that to watch the spectacular English championship you need as many as three subscriptions, which however are not enough to follow all the matches for the simple fact that the current legislation provides for "TV blackout" times for the Premier, in order to encourage fans to go to the stadium. In the United Kingdom, in fact, 200 matches out of 380 are broadcast on TV, 128 on Sky, 52 on TNT Sports and 20 on Prime Video. Overall, these subscriptions cost 90 euros per month.
In Spain , where la liga Española this year will be even more spectacular thanks to the arrival of Mbappè at Real Madrid, the championship is included on MovieStar +, a service connected to fiber that costs 100.90 euros per month and includes the matches. This price rises to 113.90 euros per month to have all the football : More than double compared to the complete Italian package we talked about above.
In France , however, despite the stellar PSG, the situation is different also due to the difficulties of Mediapro: Ligue 1 is available on Prime Video at a price of 21 euros per month and on Canale+ which requires 34.99 euros per month. The total, therefore, here too is more than 50 euros and two subscriptions are required.
Speaking of two subscriptions, let's go to Germany Bundesliga where DAZN costs 24.99 euros and broadcasts 106 league matches and 121 Champions League matches, which is added to the 24.99 euros requested by Sky which broadcasts the remaining part of the matches, for a total of 49.99 euros.
In short, everywhere football is becoming almost a luxury for the few and at this point many questions arise: various club presidents, to talk about the drop in ratings, have observed how football's main competitor is not represented by Netflix and other streaming services, but by TikTok, Instagram and Fortnite. The problem, however, is that the latter are free and accessible to everyone, and Netflix still has much lower costs, fewer constraints and the possibility of accessing a practically limitless catalogue of films, TV series, anime, documentaries and more: how can we think of fighting piracy (which must be condemned regardless, especially because it is now used by criminal organisations to fund their activities) and the decline in audiences if we are making a popular sport increasingly niche, as it is only accessible to those who can afford to spend 50-60 euros a month?
